SINGLE REVIEW: Lizzo – About Damn Time

Lizzo is ready to make us feel good again as she prepares for the release of her highly anticipated fourth studio album ‘Special’, which is slated for a July 15 release. It’s been three years in-between album releases for the iconic singer-songwriter who has delivered us so many empowering reminders in the past. So yeah, it’s about damn time we feel that uplifting and sass fuelled messaging again.

Coincidently, the first single from the record is appropriately titled ‘About Damn Time’, and it fiercely welcomes her back into our airwaves with a glittery disco-pop inspired Lizzobanger. “It’s bad bitch o’clock, yeah, it’s thick-thirty. I’ve been through a lot, but I’m still flirty” she proclaims during the opening lines of the song. Immediately setting the tone, she brings that high level of energy and sass that she’s very well known for, while also laying down a message of independence and empowerment. “Oh, I been so down and under pressure. I’m way too fine to be this stressed, yeah. Oh, I’m not the girl I was or used to be, uh, bitch, I might be better”.

The song is all about bouncing back and re-finding your confidence after going through a rough patch that feels never-ending. It captures that “oh, I’m back” euphoric feeling that is equally satisfying, empowering, and relieving. Sometimes you can not feel like yourself for a very long period of time, so when you finally get to a place where you feel confident in your skin again, then you feel unstoppable.

Layered over a retrospective disco-pop production that is slick and rhythmically groovy, she inserts her unique sass fuelled vocal delivery to take it to a whole new level. It feels like an instant classic Lizzo track with its empowering message that is delivered in a light hearted and humorous manner. Welcome back Lizzo, we missed you.
