SINGLE REVIEW: Aly & AJ – Slow Dancing

It’s been a long wait but Aly & AJ’s upcoming fourth studio album will finally be released in 2021, and they’re ready to have you dancing, crying and reminiscing through their dreamy new pop soundscape. Since making their bold return in 2017, the dynamic sister duo have been experimenting with their sound, and showing listeners a mature growth through their artistry. And the lead single for this new record perfectly captures that growth with a poignantly titled slow dance moment.

‘Slow Dancing’ is a timely moment of tender reflection. Written as a love letter to someone while being separated from them in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, they confess their undying love for them. It’s a romantic ode of how it will always be them against the world together, and if you don’t feel warm inside after listening to it then you might want to check if your heart is actually still inside your body, because it’s SO SWEET.

“I want you to know, I don’t need anything fancy. I just need me and you slow dancing” they sing during the heartfelt chorus.

The production begins quite simply with just a guitar riff layered by their dreamy vocals over the top. As the song builds steadily, it has this doo-woop vibe to it which is complimented by a cinematic mix. It truly is the slow dance moment of their future live show, and is the humble moment of reflection and breathing.

Aly & AJ could’ve easily delivered us a straight up synth-pop banger to kick start this new album era like they have with their previous EP’s, but what they’ve given us is actually a lot more powerful. ‘Slow Dancing’ highlights not only their growth in artistry, but also the emotional contrast in the direction that this new music has been heading since their highly acclaimed return.
