SINGLE REVIEW: Cub Sport – Summer Lover

With their self-titled third studio album only around the corner, Brisbane indie-pop favourites Cub Sport have decided to give their fans a little early christmas present. ‘Summer Lover’ serves as the final song on the record and is ironically only the second track we’ve heard from this collection. The dreamy and nostalgic track continues the synth-wave approach ‘Sometimes’ influenced but has a more sedated delivery. The short and sweet moment sits comfortably at only 2 minutes long and with a gradual production growth it seems like it works towards a big euphoric release. But that moment never really seemed to come. As the production builds and leads up to this cathartic closure, it feels quite anti-climatic. But on the other hand, this song is also very nostalgic and sweetly simple. The dreamy and minimalist synths made this album closer a dreamy reflection of true love. it perfectly sums up the emotions and journey that the band have taken to get to where they are today. “I never had summer with another lover”. The deep, reflective and sweet confession will give you all the feels and have you feeling very nostalgic and reminiscent. Which is what a good album closer should make you feel.
