If you want a masterclass in pop songwriting then all you need to do is listen to Dagny’s discography and writing catalogue. The Norwegian artist knows how to write a catchy hook, and she also knows how to deliver raw emotions through a candy-coloured lens. Her new single “Heartbreak In The Making” is her first release of 2023, and comes along with the announcement of her biggest headline show yet in Oslo which sees her hitting arena status.
This ethereal track is led by guitars, drums and explosive synths and feels cemented in the pop world of escapism. Reminiscent of the likes of Coldplay, MUNA and Carly Rae Jepsen, she captures this electric energy that will have you transported to the middle of summer. Exploring the excitement of getting to know someone romantically, she also finds scepticism in where it could lead and the comfort and familiarity of being heartbroken. “You’re like a stranger I’ve already met. You’re like a fantasy I’ve had in my head. I’m giving in, but I know how it ends. You feel like a heartbreak in the making” she sings during the anthemic chorus.
This is the first official taste of her sophomore record which is slated for release later this year, and if this is anything to go by then we better get ready for some epic singalong’s in the near future.
