SINGLE REVIEW: Spacey Jane – Hardlight

Spacey Jane are undoubtedly one of Australia’s biggest bands, and on June 24 they will be sharing one of the most anticipated albums of the year ‘Here Comes Everybody’, followed by a mammoth Australian tour. With singles like ‘Lots Of Nothing’, ‘Lunchtime’, ‘Sitting Up’ and the stellar ‘It’s Been A Long Day’ leading listeners up to the release, they’ve dropped another perfect slice of classic Spacey Jane chill-rock with an emotional centre.

Reflecting on anxiety and the complexities of mental health, on ‘Hardlight’ lead vocalist Caleb Harper uses the idea of forgetting your lines on set and the embarrassment and anxiety it creates as a way to peak into the very real feelings he has experienced. Feeling like has no idea what he’s doing in life, it’s about embracing that feeling and realising that all of us are feeling the same way and are making things up as we go. It’s also about not dismissing those very real feelings and acknowledging that it’s okay to sit with them. “Can you see the weight I’m wearing on my shoulder? Each one’s worse and stays a little longer” he honestly sings before admitting “I came out to say that I, I’m not feeling the same. Sitting on your bed, coming down”.

The relaxed sonical palette sits in a similar realm to ‘It’s Been A Long Day’ and has an anthemic edge to the hook that you can already imagine being screamed along to at their live show. An immediate favourite, ‘Hardlight’ is a special song that continues to impress listeners even after the first couple of spins.
