SOFI TUKKER are no strangers to fun and electronic house music with quirky pop hooks. After all, you only need to look as far as their smash hits ‘Purple Hat’, ‘Drinkee’ and ‘House Arrest’ to know that they are powerhouses in that field. But with their sophomore studio album ‘WET TENNIS’ slated for an April 29 release, the Florida based duo want to show listeners the versatility behind their artistry.
Their new single ‘Forgive Me’ may just be one of their most experimental releases to date. The electrionic ballad is infused with traditional Turkish melodies that takes this song to new heights. Contrasting the sonical experimentation with a lyrical vulnerability, they explore the moment you learn to forgive yourself for the worst thing you’ve ever done, and forgive another for the harm they caused you.
The music video intertwines the emotional identity of the song along with the experimental playfulness of the production. And shooting the video was apparently just as liberating as it seems watching it. “We shot the music video together with Mahmut in Istanbul. It was the first international trip we took after Covid and our whole crew was so giddy to be traveling again. We laughed for 4 days straight. We have so many inside jokes from that time. The camaraderie and fun on set was unparalleled. At the end of the trip, we were sharing a final dinner together with our crew and Mahmut’s crew, going around the table, explaining what the trip meant to us, and everyone shared such moving anecdotes. It was what life is all about. Creating art together with people you admire and love. Turning a difficult experience (what the song is about) into a beautiful experience (the creation of the music and visuals)… that alchemy makes life feel magical” Tucker Halpern explains of the atmosphere behind the music video.
The cinematography for ‘Forgive Me’ is stunning and it genuinely feels like a fashion look-book with the way the attention to detail is meticulously captured. From the lighting, to the distinct angles, to the gorgeous fashion, everything is purposeful and you’ll be in awe throughout the entire 3:46 minute duration.
”Like any other director, there are themes that I’m most interested in. From the first meeting for ‘Forgive Me’ I was inspired by the idea of creating a highly personal piece of work, capturing Sofi’s initial intentions in writing the song centring around the theme of forgiveness. I came up with the concept of creating a clone of Sofi, symbolizing a darker side of her. After finding the central narrative, I was looking for ways to incorporate both Tukker and Mahmut Orhan into the story. This resulted in a journey of Sofi and her clone searching for a virtuous tribe led by Mahmut Orhan, and Tukker as a brash racing driver zipping around in dreamlike places.” Direction Hakan Can explains of the concept.
