Hatchie is slated to release her sophomore record ‘Giving The World Away’ on April 22, and it’s already promising to be her boldest and most defining body of work yet. The Australian singer-songwriter has hit the road for an intimate run of dates to preview some of the new tracks to her fans, while also celebrating all of the music that came before it.
Treating the Brisbane crowd to a night of dreamy and magical synth-pop inside the beautiful setting of The Old Museum, she took to the stage with her live band for the opening track ‘This Enchanted’ which is one of the recent singles lifted from the forthcoming album. “Good evening Brisbane! I’m Hatchie, but you probably already know that” she quipped as she set the tone for the intimate and honest evening. With old favourites like ‘Obsessed’, ‘Try’, ‘Without A Blush’, ‘Sleep’ and ‘Stay With Me’ sprinkled throughout the set, the singalongs were coming in strong with the audience swaying along to the dreamy soundscape.
With the new album on the way she decided to test out some new material with the experimental ‘The Rhythm’ giving a strong indication of the creative vision she has in store for listeners. But the true masterpiece was ‘Lights On’, which may just have her best and catchiest hook yet. The infectious track has this natural charm that will immediately takeover and get stuck in your head indefinitely. It’s a hit waiting to be unleashed.
Switching it up for a moment to perform a cover, she gave the audience a glittery version of Jennifer Page’s ‘Crush’ which she originally recorded for her label Secretly Canadian’s 25th anniversary. Reassuring the crowd there was going to be no encore, she encouraged everyone to dance one last time as she closed the set out with ‘Quicksand’ and ‘Sure’.
Hatchie is a natural performer. She has a real 90’s energy to her that reminds me of an early Alanis Morissette with a bit of pop-glitter reminiscent of MUNA.
