SINGLE REVIEW: Mallrat – Your Love

In 2020 Mallrat teased the release of her debut album with the definitively charged lead single ‘Rockstar’, which not only became a fan favourite, but also came in at #13 on the triple j Hottest 100. But since then she has been really quiet on the new-music front with 2021 seeing her touring where she was allowed, and collaborating with The Knocks on ‘R U HIGH?’. We’ve been patiently waiting for the next chapter of Mallrat music, and we’ve now finally got it.

‘Your Love’ is a total reset for the Brisbane raised singer-songwriter. It’s a song that breathes a confident new light, while still paying homage to her airy pop roots. Opening with heavenly synths and samples while her signature angelic vocals slick over the top, she welcomes you into this dreamy soundscape before dropping a hip-hop influenced beat in the chorus. As the song steers into its outro, she incorporates a sample from Gangsta Pat that adds a layer of unexpected, but still cohesively fits.

Exploring falling for someone and knowing that you aren’t necessarily their type, but sticking to your ground and acknowledging that you are enough, and if they like you for you then they can have your love. “I know your type, what you likes. A young corpse bride, cold as ice. I’m alive but I’m on fire. If that’s alright, I want your love” she angelically sings.

Mallrat is officially back, and we couldn’t be happier. I’m ready for a year of bangers, and heartfelt singalongs that will soundtrack all of the wholesome moments in your life.
