Colliding the worlds of electronic music and drag together, Jawbreakers have infiltrated stages across Australia with their signature bubblegum pop filled sets. With their bright and bouncy personalities and playful mixes, the Melbourne DJ duo have gained themselves a rapidly building fanbase. Following their signing to Extrovert Music they have dropped their nostalgic leaning debut single which is a cover of an Ashlee Simpson classic.
Bringing ‘Boyfriend’ into 2022, Kali and Sabrina have reimagined it with bouncy bubblegum pop production that is driven by foot-to-the-floor beats. With the opening vocal refrain of “woah, woah, woah, ha! Didn’t steal your friend” echoing in your head, the 2000’s nostalgia is immediately cemented with AMUNDA’s vocals familiarly striking a tone with you. AMUNDA was the former lead singer of ARIA award winning alt-pop group Operator Please, and from the moment she started that vocal refrain I was taken back to listening to ‘Yes Yes Vindictive’ on repeat in my bedroom. I’ve missed hearing her vocals in pop music, and her vocal tone was absolutely perfect for this slice of Y2K pop gold.
Jawbreakers haven’t just recorded a cover for their debut single. They’ve completely reimagined a song that was already a hit, and gave it a new lease. With its pop-rock foundations still very much intact at its roots, they’ve saturated it in a bubblegum pop layer that takes it from the moshpit’s into the clubs and has you celebrating an anthem all over again.
You can catch Jawbreakers this March at Summer Camp Festival alongside Years & Years, Big Freedia, Cub Sport and The Veronicas. https://summercampfestival.com.au/
