SINGLE REVIEW: Alesso & Katy Perry – When I’m Gone

Over the New Year period Katy Perry has kicked off her critically acclaimed Las Vegas residency ‘Play’ which is a bright, innovative and extravagant return to the stage. Perfectly colliding with the commencement of dates is one of her most addictive dance-pop collaborations yet. Teaming up with Swedish producer Alesso, ‘When I’m Gone’ has an ear worm hook and tantalising beat that will not leave your head for hours.

Sonically (and even lyrically) it feels like the sequel to ‘Never Really Over’, which is confusingly Perry’s most underrated single to date. Interwoven with fresh synths and foot-to-the-floor beats, the song contrasts this bold confidence with sensual intimacy. There is also a darkness layered in the pop-centric production which provides a lot of texture and will have you ready to immediately hit replay.

The hook is a BELTER, but the post-chorus… ooft! Now that is something I didn’t totally expect from this song, and it’s something I definitely won’t forget for a long time. It’s sexy, confident and commanding, which is exactly the Katy Perry we wanted to hear again.

“Me on top of you, touch you like I do, no, you’ll never forget. When I’m gone, I’m never really gone” she sings in this post break-up anthem.
