SINGLE REVIEW: Carla Wehbe – Hurts To Love You

Carla Wehbe is making sure you know that she is a force to be reckoned with. Following the release of her debut EP ‘Half Past Nine’ last year, the Sydney based singer-songwriter is back with an undeniably infectious release. ‘Hurts To Love You’ is her first release since signing to Warner Music Australia, and it’s one that is immediately going to be stuck in your head.

Sometimes we love someone so much that it’s hard to let go, even when you know it’s for the best. We don’t want to hurt them because you do genuinely care about them, but you know that you need to put yourself first and stop the toxicity from growing. Carla puts up her boundaries in this very same situation and admits; “I know I said I wouldn’t leave, but it hurts to love you”. But as she walks away she acknowledges that it isn’t easy and the feelings she has aren’t just going to disappear. “Now I just miss you, as long as I promised to love you. Wish I didn’t miss you, wish I could forget how to love you” she sings.

Contrasting these heavy emotions with a bright synth led pop production, she layers dominative drums with a soothing pop melody. Sonically reminiscent of HAIM, there is a freeing nature embedded to the song. It feels like she’s letting go of all of her emotions, and while she isn’t forgetting how she’s feeling, she is trying to move forward, and that’s the energy we need to take into 2022.
