bbno$ is a Canadian-Armenian rapper, singer and songwriter who is no stranger to the viral success of music. His Y2K collaboration ‘Lalala’ took over radio, playlisting and charts in 2019 and 2020 thanks to its success through TikTok which is quickly becoming the number one platform that people are discovering new music through. Behind that viral track is five albums and three EP’s of material that showcase who he is as an artist with a quick wit embedded into his songwriting.
His new single ‘Edamame’ is the epitome of ridiculousness with a whole lot of playfulness and energy pulsating through the 2 minute track. Collaborating with Rich Brian, they have delivered pure fire that you will want to have on repeat.
I recently chatted to bbno$ about his punchy new single ‘Edamame’, collaborating with Rich Brian, and the heavy armour suits they wear in the music video. Check it out BELOW;
THOMAS BLEACH: Your new single ‘Edamame’ is a bouncy track that serves a whole lot of punch within its 2 minute duration. Can you explain the creative process behind this track?
BBNO$: I met up with diamond pistols (producer), and we were like “YOOOOOOOOOOOO”. Then we made the song and then I was like “YOOOOOOOOOOO Brian” and attached the file and sent it to him and he was like “YOOOOO”… Then we both were like… “YOOOOOOOO” and we finished the song. It was dope.
TB: For this track you collaborated with Rich Brian. What was one of the most surprising things you learnt about him as a collaborator?
B: He writes really fast! I thought I kinda wrote fast, but he is next level *laughs*.
TB: There are so many great one liners in the song like “I’ma pop you like a pea, yeah, edamame”. So what is one of your favourite lyrics from the song and why?
B: “Balls hanging low while I pop a bottle off a yacht. Chain swinging cling clang and it cost a lot”, is undoubtedly the catchiest line in the song. The use of light alliteration and onomatopoeia on those lines, got everybody talking about it. Every single comment section people are like…”yoooo how he says cling clang is so rewarding” *laughs*.
TB: You’ve collaborated with a lot of different artists like MAX, Y2K, and Yung Gravy to name a few. So what has been one of the most surprising collaborative sessions you’ve had where you’ve walked away with a track or artistic connection you maybe didn’t expect?
B: I was in a session once, walked outside and Usher was just chilling in the studio, it was super dope. I said “sup” and he said “sup” and that was pretty much it. But cool nonetheless.
TB: The music video for ‘Edamame’ is perfectly bonkers with both you and Rich Brian in armour suits doing things around the house. What was one of the funniest things to happen while you were shooting the video?
B: Just the inability to do literally anything *laughs*. The suits are outrageously heavy and I was baffled. Like, who thought years ago this would make you a more effective fighter and knight. Just who in their right mind would go craft a 150 pounds suit and expect you to be agile in the battlefield?
TB: Did you keep the suits after, because they seem like a fun encore outfit for your next tour?
B: I wish!!! It was honestly 100+ pounds.. Performing in that shit would be outrageously painful.
TB: ‘Lalala’ is a track that has had a complete life of its own. So where is one of the weirdest places you’ve heard this song being played?
B: I was having pho at my favourite restaurant in Vancouver called Pho Tan on Arbutus and 41st when my song came on, and they ended up giving me a free sub. It was super dope *laughs*.
TB: With the song really finding a home on TikTok, what is one of your favourite TikTok videos you’ve seen featuring the song?
B: Bruh, I have NO idea. There are millions of videos.. Literally, they are all epic *laughs*.
TB: Let’s play a quick game of rapid fire questions, you ready?
B: *laughs*, sure!
TB: The emoji that best describes my new single ‘Edamame’ is…
B: The sexy face
TB: When I think of Australia I think of…
B: The Chats, and drinking and partying *laughs! Laneway Festival was sick!
TB: The colour of my toothbrush at the moment is…
B: Blue, turning green! I should get a new one
TB: A hobby or weird obsession I picked up during lockdown has been…
B: Crying *laughs*, not really though!
TB: Pineapple on pizza is…
B: Ok yes on bbq pizza with bbq sauce because it compliments the sweetness. But otherwise super mid!
‘Edamame’ is out now!
