Eves Karydas is one of Australia’s most exciting pop star’s currently in full trajectory. With the expansive commercial success of ‘Complicated’, the singer-songwriter is really diving into the experimental side of her artistry and delivering a polished sound that is making her forthcoming sophomore studio album a definite must listen.
With restrictions finally easing, she hit the road with her band in tow for an extensive Queensland tour to celebrate the release of ‘Complicated’, ‘Get Me So High’ and recent single ‘Freckles’. This tour acts as her first full run of shows since 2019 after she only played two shows last year thanks to the global pandemic. Kicking off her two night residency at The Triffid in Brisbane, she had the excited crowd immediately dancing and passionately singing along with her in the opening track ‘There For You’.
Taking the crowd through songs from her debut album ‘summerskin’ like ‘Balance’, ‘Damn Loyal’ and the euphoric anthem ‘Couch’, she highlighted the youthful essence that was behind that record before showcasing the growth and maturity that has been poured into this next chapter.
‘Cardboard Box’ was the only unreleased song to make it’s way onto the setlist, and was also an exclusive track for the Brisbane shows to celebrate the full circle moment of her headlining The Triffid which was her first support slot under this new project in 2018 when she opened for Cub Sport.
Her triple j Like A Version cover of Ruel’s ‘Painkiller’ was a welcomed addition before she rolled into recent singles ‘Freckles’ and ‘Get Me So High’ as well as debut album favourites ‘Hush’ and ‘Wildest Ones’ which is aways a dreamy moment in her live set. With the distinct synths of ‘Further Than The Planes Fly’ echoing through the venue, the crowd ecstatically let loose and screamed along to the euphoric track before doing it again with ‘Complicated’ which truly is a special song live.
This set was a masterclass in pop and was executed with a mix of polish and wholesomeness. Eves Karydas is no stranger to the live stage but over the years she’s really come into her own as a performer, and after witnessing this show it’s safe to say she’s really found her own stride.
