The Veronicas have been teasing new music for a long time, and they aren’t holding back from keeping us FED with a whole lot of announcements all at once. Dropping their highly anticipated new single ‘Godzilla’, they’ve also announced that their fourth and fifth studio albums ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Human’ will be released on May 28 and July 2 respectively which will hear them exploring the two dynamic sides of their artistry. On top of all that, the iconic sister duo will also hit the road this June for a mammoth run of shows, which will act as their first national headlining tour in six years. So if you’re a Veronicas fan, then today is a VERY good day.
Lead single ‘Godzilla’ is an experimental affair produced by ‘Untouched’ collaborator Toby Gad. Sonically it returns to their roots and combines all of their influences together for a big mosh pitt moment. With the heavy guitars and drums from ‘The Secret Life Of…’ intertwined with the pulsating synths of ‘Hook Me Up’, they organically find a place for these sounds to coexist. Jess even gets in a bit of a scream during the chorus which is something we didn’t get to hear on their last self-titled record, so it’s a welcomed return.
Exploring the complexities of a toxic relationship through a playful lens, they question what if they turn into Godzilla and get their revenge. “You made me a saviour, but who’s gonna save me from ya? Used to get under my skin, but now you only get under my dress” they sing before quipping “It’s like I’m Godzilla. I love ya, I’ll kill ya” in the punchy hook.
Laying down the experimental foundations and prominent energy behind the first of the two new records, ‘Godzilla’ oozes that classic touch of their discography. There’s a layer of the unexpected that is unravelled with the production breakdown in the bridge, the screams, and the drawn out outro. Upon the first listen, you will feel like you’ve just rediscovered an old The Veronicas song, and that’s exactly the sort of energy they wanted to give you on this track.
