Brisbane based singer-songwriter Sycco is stepping into a full-blown pop soundscape with her infectious new single ‘My Ways’. The disco tinged banger loosely follows in the footsteps of her previous singles ‘Germs’, ‘Dribble’ and ‘Nicotine’, but this time she turns up the pop influence and completely owns it. From the opening injection of synths, her signature vocals are layered over the top and immediately bring you into this storyline of repetition.
My favourite part of the production is just how fresh and infectious it feels. Disco influenced synth pop has been done A LOT recently, and this doesn’t feel exhaustive at all. The breakdown of production while she sings “Sit down, sleep now. Breathe in, breathe out” with just a simple drum beat is SMART, and gives it a quirky and playful moment that completely stands out. It’s a moment that you know is just going to be so much fun in her live show.
The track explores the monotonous repetition of day-to-day life where you lose track of what day of the week it is, and get so caught up in your head that you just want to get out of it. It’s a feeling that so many of us can relate to with the last year of lockdowns and restrictions forcing us to have so much time of introspection, that it’s never a good time. “Wanna switch up all my bad routines. What happened to the days, it was just last week” she sings.
The groovy and ridiculously catchy track layers honest reflection with slick production that will have you immediately taking notice, and wanting to hit replay on this little banger.
