SINGLE REVIEW: Alexander 23 – Cry Over Boys

“You cry over boys you haven’t even met in real life” may just be one of the most relatable lyrics of 2021 so far. It’s one that I wish I didn’t relate to so much, but being a Pisces, my emotional heart and creative mind loves to take me down a rabbit hole of constant FEELINGS. So Alexander 23’s new single ‘Cry Over Boys’ is a significant READ of my personality, and I’m here for it.

Posting a snippet of the demo on TikTok in late November 2020, the singer-songwriter teased the song to his passionate fans who immediately demanded an official release. This may be one of the most interesting and innovative new ways to releasing songs as it directly surveys opinions from fans, who are in-turn the consumers of the tracks, so it makes sense to see if they actually connect with the vision you are bubbling. We’ve recently seen it successfully done on TikTok by artists like Mothica, Cate, and Sarah Saint James, and it’s something I think we will see more artists doing.

The track reflects on the loop that people can get stuck in where they romanticise romance at the cost of their own happiness. It’s a continuous cycle where they build up unrealistic expectations and get hurt at something that hasn’t even happened. “Aren’t you tired of getting hurt? Aren’t you sick of, of making it worse?” he sings during the bridge. With a light production he holds onto the delicate feelings with just an acoustic guitar before adding in some atmospheric pop beats that brings a cinematic growth.

‘Cry Over Boys’ is another intimate and conversational track from Alexander 23 that highlights him as an artist with a very bright and observational vision which holds a very honest punch of feelings.
