SINGLE REVIEW: Ariana Grande – Positions

Surprising the world and single handedly shutting down the internet with the tweet “I can’t wait to give u my album this month”, Ariana Grande is ready to save the year and deliver new music in a time where we really need it.

On October 30 she will release her sixth studio album ‘Positions’, but before she drops the fourteen track collection she has given fans the title track as a little teaser. However this RNB pop track feels like her weakest lead single yet in comparison to ‘The Way’, ‘Problem’, ‘Dangerous Woman’, ‘No Tears Left To Cry’ and ‘Thank U, Next’. It just doesn’t stand as strong next to any of them in comparison, and feels a little anti-climatic.

Staying at the same tempo throughout the full duration, she doesn’t switch up the production or give you any real standout moments. Her vocals are absolutely incredible as always, but they can’t save a song every time. There has to be more, and sadly the melody and production was where it was lacking.

However the lyrical concept is strong and there. Reflecting on a relationship where she’s picking up all the slack and doing everything she can to make it work, she gives us some very relatable lines. “Switching the positions for you. Cooking in the kitchen and I’m in the bedroom. I’m in the Olympics, way I’m jumping through hoops” she sings.

With thirteen new songs to be revealed on Friday, surely there are going to be better songs to embrace than this “okay” RNB-pop song. It’s not a bad song, but it’s just a little… meh.
