SINGLE REVIEW: Jakøb – Daydream

Through organically building his foundations as an artist and releasing a drip feed of songs alongside his debut EP last year, Jakøb’s growing trajectory is impressively strong. With a definitive sound coming into fruition, the Sydney based singer-songwriter has truly found his voice.

Fresh off the heels of releasing his first single of 2020, ‘Selfish’, in late August, he’s back with another mature track. ‘Daydream’ is a step into this newly evolved sonic which quickly draws comparisons to the likes of Ruel, Rex Orange County, Shawn Mendes, and Cody Jon. It steps further away from the dark RNB sound his debut EP channeled, and instead takes a more organic approach sonically with live instrumentation shining through. But the confidence he found within his vocal delivery from the first EP is still in tact, and really drives the soul of this track.

Produced and co-written by Taka Perry, he helps hone this sound with Jakøb to give listeners a really captivating moment of reflection. Exploring the rediscovery of love that you can have for someone, he inserts a vision of daydreaming while imagining the times they spent together, and why he still feels strongly for them and wants to rekindle that spark. “If you give me a chance, I can be your best friend. We don’t have to pretend. All that I have is yours, what are you waiting for?” he croons during the chorus.

‘Daydream’ is a groovy indie-pop moment that continues the sonical exploration he stepped into through ‘Selfish’. He sounds even more confident with who he is as an artist and it’s really engaging and exciting to hear.
