Marshmello and Demi Lovato have teamed up for a song that acts as the perfect anthem for National Suicide Prevention Month. ‘Ok Not To Be Ok’ was coincidently dropped on R U OK Day and hears them reassuring people that it’s normal to feel burnt out, upset, depressed or confused in moments that you may not even understand why. Trying to break down the stigmas that are associated with mental health, they actively describe the feelings that everyone experiences in these spiralling moments.
“Feeling like your life’s an illusion and lately you’re secluded. Thinking you’ll never get your chancе, feeling like you got no solution. It’s only cause you’re human. No control, it’s out of your hands” Lovato sings during the second verse before proclaiming in the chorus, “When you’re down and you feel ashamed, it’s okay not to be okay”.
The production is slinky and oozes these pulsating synths that intertwine with an 80’s inspired guitar riff which will immediately have you wanting to dance along. David Guetta and Sia attempted to do the same thing this week with a similar concept, but failed to succeed because they kept very surface level. Their production was on trend, but their lyrics were too cookie cutter that the empowering nature of the song got lost. Where as Marshmello and Demi Lovato have got candid and honest with it lyrically, which adds so much depth and power to the naturally groovy foundations.
This is one that you’re going to want to have on repeat!
