SINGLE REVIEW: Emalia – Suga Rush

Australia has a new RNB princess on the rise, and her name is Emalia. The Sydney based singer-songwriter has been introducing herself to listeners over the past year with a string of singles that have showed a distinct diversity and growth in her artistry.

‘Suga Rush’ is her third single for 2020 and preludes her debut EP which is expected to drop later this year. The sultry track has an addictive undertone that is powered by the slow jam RNB production. Complimented by the simple keys, plucking of the guitar chords, and the nostalgic RNB beat, it smoothly captures a seductive vibe that immediately pulls you in.

Adding a distinct contrast to the production, the song describes a toxic relationship that has you uncannily addicted and continually coming back. While you’re aware of the toxicity there is a level of sexiness that captures you and that’s what this song successfully embodies.

“Old school loving. Suga rush buzzing. Guess I will be sick to my stomach on a sweet suga rush”. she sings during the chorus.

Sonically channelling the likes of Mahalia, Ella Mai and Kehlani, this track is one that continually grows on you and has you instantly feeling that sugar rush in your veins.
