BENEE is one of New Zealand’s biggest success stories since the uprising of Lorde. Following recent performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Ellen Show, and the announcement of a massive homecoming New Zealand tour, the 20 year old singer-songwriter has got a new song for you to immerse yourself within.
‘Night Garden’ hears her teaming up with Kenny Beats & Bakar for a dark alt-pop moment that metaphorically dives into a exploration of mental health.
Reflecting on all of the dark thoughts that haunt her at night, she highlights the normality of it through explaining the feelings she experiences within those moments. “In the night garden things are out there creeping. They get into my dreams then befriend all my demons” she sings during the chorus.
With a similar aesthetic to ‘Monsta’ and ‘Evil Spider’, this song plays on the laid back vibe she’s created previously within her sound. Melodically it’s not as in your face and as instantly memorable as ‘Supalonely’, ‘Find An Island’ or ‘Soaked’, but it’s a consistent grower and shows a deep maturity at it’s roots.
