With the release of his third studio album ‘Golden Hour’ slated for a May 29 release, Kygo is pulling out all the tricks to have you eagerly keen to hear the body of work. Continuing the string of singles he’s previously delivered with the likes of Sasha Sloan, Zara Larsson, Tyga and Zak Abel, he’s teamed up with One Republic to keep the star-power rolling.
This isn’t the first time Kygo and One Republic have collaborated, and it’s clear that on this track he’s desperately searching for that mainstream crossover hit.
‘Lose Somebody’ is a classic EDM-pop crossover that layers the same beats with the same drops and melodies. There really isn’t any element of surprise and feels like the same recycled song with every single release from this record so far. It’s very generic.
And even the songwriting is pretty basic with a strong concept that is sadly executed in a cookie cutter fashion. And with seven co-writers on the track I would’ve loved them to dive in a little deeper and give us something that wasn’t so borderline.
The song explores the idea of having to go through heartbreak to find true love, but stays very surface level with lyrics like “Sometimes you gotta lose somebody just to find out you really love someone” providing as much detail as we get.
It just honestly lacks the innovative approach that we need from this song.
