Throughout quarantine Charli XCX has been working on an album that she’s exclusively written, produced and recorded during this time. ‘How I’m Feeling Now’ will be released on May 15 and is a creative affair that has pushed her boundaries and allowed her to be very “present” within her music and the process.
‘I Finally Understand’ is the final single to be released before the album drops and it’s a fitting reflection on true love and how quarantine has pushed her and her boyfriend closer.
Explaining to Zane Lowe following it’s premiere that the couple were in a physical and mentally distancing relationship pre-Covid, she highlights that quarantine has saved their relationship in so many ways as they are now so much closer.
So this song embraces the emotions of finally understanding what true love is and the deep connection they both share.
“Baby, I love you bad cause lately I finally understand that maybe this feeling that I’ve found might kill me, put me in the ground” she sings during the chorus.
The whole song has a lot of relatable and honest lyrics that cite that personal breakthrough. “I finally understand, finally understand. My therapist said I hate myself really bad. You tell me it’s fine, let me cry and hug it out”.
The production is quintessential Charli XCX with pulsating DIY pop synths, vocoder and glitchy affects. It’s high energy while also not being completely over top. She allows the lyrics and honest confession to take centre stage while the production circulates.
