SINGLE REVIEW: Sam Smith feat. Demi Lovato – I’m Ready

While their third studio album may have been put on hold due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, Sam Smith is ready to give fans a new collaboration to get excited about.

The hopeful ‘I’m Ready’ hears them teaming up with Demi Lovato for a song that embraces lowering your guard and being ready to fall in love again after having your heart broken and your confidence lose its shine.

“I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready for someone to love me” they sing during the pop-tastic hook.

With the snare drum driven verses creating a strong momentum the chorus pulls back completely with a piano centred hook that allows their vocals to shine before the snare beat comes back in. The strongest part of the song is the gospel influenced breakdown at the end where Lovato and Smith harmonise with each other beautifully and soulfully.

The song is cute and has strong radio potential but it’s just a little cheesy. The chorus lacks the emotive hold that their previous tracks embody and feels a little simple.

I expected more from a Sam Smith and Demi Lovato collaboration and was ready to sob through the heavy emotions, but instead I just rolled my eyes a little with the blatant cheesiness that took away from the beautiful hopefulness.
