2019 has been a big year for Iggy Azalea. From playing pride festivals to releasing her highly anticipated sophomore record ‘In My Defense’, the Australian rapper took full control of her brand and her creativity in an empowering statement of independence.
From being a meme on social media to a joke in the tabloids, she has stripped it back to be all about the music and proving why she initially had a rapid incline in 2014. Her new single from her forthcoming third EP ‘Wicked Lips’ is a Latin-pop crossover.
Interpolating Dean Martins version of ‘Mambo Italiano’ the production ends up sounding very similar to Camila Cabello’s ‘Havana’ meets Cardi B’s ‘I Like It’. The originality of the track is a little lost as it immediately sounds like multiple familiar tracks. Instead of losing yourself in the playful energy of the song, you end up just wishing she spiced the production up with a completely different sound or angle.
I feel like there is so much she could’ve done in the production and structure of the song to make it feel more individually strong. But instead it just falls flat and plays it safe with elements that she already knows that works.
Sadly radio isn’t going to pick up a song that sounds like ‘I Like It’ and ‘Havana’ when they can just play those songs. It needs to have a spark and a different and sadly Iggy or Alice Chater don’t bring that on this particular track.
