SINGLE REVIEW: Dua Lipa – Don’t Start Now

In-between some huge collaborations with Silk City, Mark Ronson, Calvin Harris, Martin Garrix, Sean Paul and Andrea Bocelli, as well as doing the lead single for the Alita: Battle Angel Soundtrack and a song with Whethan for the Fifty Shades Freed Soundtrack, Dua Lipa has been preparing the next step in the evolution of her artistry with her forthcoming sophomore record.

Her self-titled debut saw her making a huge impact on the charts with songs like ‘Be The One’, ‘New Rules’, ‘Blow Your Mind’ and ‘Hotter Than Hell’ added to heavy rotation status. Becoming one of the biggest UK artists of right now, her shows were selling out worldwide, and rightfully so.

Stepping towards a disco injected sound, her comeback single is a bonafide hit and I don’t think you’re ready for the amount of sass Ms Lipa has in store for you.

Gagged. That was my immediate reaction as the song rolled into the first chorus. The confidence that oozed through her delivery was electric and so infectious. “Don’t show up, don’t come out. Don’t start caring about me now. Walk away, you know how. Don’t start caring about me now” she sassily sings during the epic chorus. And if you don’t start immediately dancing and waving your index finger around, then I’m guessing you’ve never been hurt before.

Warming the listener up during the pre chorus she calls out her man who is trying to get back into her life with a self growth realisation. “Aren’t you the guy who tried to hurt me with the word goodbye? Though it took some time to survive you I’m better on the other side”.

The sassy disco-pop number feels like the mature sister to ‘New Rules’ and has the raw power to follow in it’s footsteps and make some real chart damage. Because I’ve said it once and I will say it again, ‘Don’t Start Now’ is a bonafide hit.

Dua Lipa will be in Australia later this month to perform at the Aria Awards on November 27 in Sydney.
