EP REVIEW: Thandi Phoenix – Thandi Phoenix

The growth of Thandi Phoenix over the past couple of years is a glittery, soulful and captivating journey. I’ve said it before and I will say it again; she is one of Australia’s best live performers and also one of the countries most underrated acts. Her live show is slick, her delivery with her band is on another level and her songs are not only catchy but are also sonically varied.

Following her recent appearance at Splendour In The Grass as well as her headline shows, the Sydney singer-songwriter is finally ready to unveil her debut self-titled EP. This polished collection of tracks takes you on a journey of evolution as she embraces her RNB influenced, drum n bass and EDM infused pop sound.

Lead single ‘Say It’ featuring Sigma combines the drum n bass pop blend she’s incorporated into her music over the years and delivers a rhythmic sound with a whole lot of energy and heart. It reflects on the power of vulnerability and that desire we all have for people to be transparent and honest about their feelings. “Say it, do you want me now? Say it, do you need me now? Confess to me”. The chorus radiates this nostalgic feeling that takes you back to the early 90’s when the clubs were bumping to this polished sound every night. Whilst in contrast, ‘Cleopatra’ takes it to the future with a hypnotic DIY sound that oozes a dark and moody electronic beat with a hook you will want to vogue along to immediately.

Wanting to showcase the many different sides of her artistry through these six tracks, Thandi has included a soulful ballad that highlights a dramatic and emotionally endearing side. Teaming up with rising RNB singer Dan Caplen, the two allow their voices on ‘Again’ to collide with smooth harmonies while soaring strings elevate the production to a place we haven’t heard her go yet.

Returning to dance floor banger territory ‘Complete’ delivers a retrospective UK Dance disco track while ‘Good Shit’ gets grittier with her production and hears her delivering a hook that you will want to experience live.

But the EP’s strongest unreleased moment comes from the bonafide future hit ‘Diggin’. Channeling the soulful and sparkly pop vibes of Ella Eyre, Jess Glynne and Anne-Marie, she delivers a self empowering song that will be stuck in your head after the first listen. It’s a song that is sonically EDM meets disco synth pop, and I couldn’t be more obsessed with the delivery.

These six tracks highlight Thandi Phoenix’s strong ability to write catchy hooks and empowering anthems that will come to life in her rhythmically engaging live show.
