I labelled ‘Better Not’ as the best song of 2018 in my end of year countdown and I still stand by that statement because WAFIA and Louis The Child delivered something fresh, innovative, thought invoking and fun that completely caught me off guard. Layered with so many different elements, they tapped into a DIY production and delivered an electric energy.
With WAFIA’s highly anticipated follow up EP to ‘VIII’ slated for a early 2020 release, the Brisbane singer-songwriter has dropped the lead single that is destined to get you bouncing in no time. Teaming up with Louis The Child and Whethan for the production, they execute another innovative and fun song.
Having already premiered this song in her live set earlier this year, this has been a track I’ve been eagerly waiting to hear again and it’s safe to say that it doesn’t disappoint. Beginning with a beat driven down-tempo RNB feel, the song then unleashes this synth driven electronic hook that is so hypnotising.
What I love about Louis The Child’s production is that it’s so fresh and innovative. They don’t follow trends or recycle the same sounds and drops that a lot of other mainstream producers continually do and it’s always so exciting. If their name is credited you can almost guarantee that it’s going to be something fresh and exciting.
Exploring a toxic relationship where it’s constantly clouded by fighting and words being carelessly thrown around she asks for some peace. It’s the final line of the chorus that really creates the biggest impact as she proclaims, “We can use some silence over war”.
That lyric alone is so powerful in this current political climate and can be interpreted in so many different ways. So while this song is a banger, it’s also an insightful journey that welcomes WAFIA back with impact.
