SINGLE REVIEW: GRYFFIN feat. Carly Rae Jepsen – OMG

I just assume every Carly Rae Jepsen song is going to be a hit, and when it’s not I get really disappointed. And sometimes I even take it personally because I feel like she can do more and she is instead holding back on us. Maybe the world isn’t ready for the pop brilliance she was preparing to unleash so instead she held back to play it safe. But whatever her reasoning was, her new collaboration with GRYFFIN is a bit of a snore.

‘OMG’ had a lot of potential. After all, it does feature Carly Rae Jepsen. But also, GRYFFIN is making quite the name for himself in the EDM-pop world. Beginning with a simple and overused beat, the song ends up sounding like a EDM-pop remake of ‘Fancy’ by Iggy Azalea in the verses, and that’s not a compliment. With an atmospheric shift in production, I was waiting for a big chorus that saved this song from being a complete disappointment. Instead it goes no where. Well, no where interesting, anyways. There was so much that GRYFFIN could’ve done with this track sonically and it seems like they didn’t even try to make IT sound fresh or unique. The least they could’ve done was include Jepsen’s dreamy and 80’S nostalgic aesthetic into the mix.
