Over the past year Jack Gray has been wowing audiences with his emotionally fuelled live performances supporting the likes of Dean Lewis and E^ST on the road. With his debut headline shows quickly approaching, the Mackay singer-songwriter is finally ready to give audiences his first complete collection. ‘Nights Like This’ is a perfect introduction to who he is as an artist. Finding the perfect balance between vulnerable lyrics, smooth harmonies and catchy hooks, Gray gives listeners a diverse collection of tracks. Opening with new hype track ‘Fools’ he dives into an experimental production whilst his vocals soar during the soothing hook. Questioning to himself; “maybe I’m just a fool, fool for you”, the reflective lyrics looks at his internal monologue surrounding his current life situation. Shifting into the anthemic ‘Drunk Talk’ he discusses the stupid things we say when we get intoxicated and the trouble that can arise. It’s a very relatable topic that has a big festival ready hook that is begging to be sung along to. ‘Down Side Of Up’ is the EP’s most experimental and indie-rock directed moment whilst ‘Bullet’ takes a cinematic approach. Looking at a tragedy in his hometown, he paints a very vivid storyline that sits in a similar soundscape as The 1975. Wrapping up the EP is the minimalistic ‘Take Our Time’. This simple piano ballad shows a different side to his vocals and offers a moody contrast to the remainder of the material on the EP. There is a sense of growth and maturity throughout the collection as he balances groovy beats and heartfelt emotions. As a introduction, this EP has you eagerly awaiting what’s next from this talented singer-songwriter but for now you will just have to go see him live.
