SINGLE REVIEW: VVAVES feat. Iggy Azalea – Boys Like You

As soon as I saw this song pop up onto my radar, I instantly was questioning “who is VVAVES?”. Have I missed out on something? And that’s not an unfair question to ask because the Canadian singer-songwriter is a fresh newcomer on the scene who over the past two years has dropped two dreamy indie-pop tracks. But ‘Boys Like You’ is a massive departure from ‘Alive’ and ‘Fall Apart’ and hears her embracing a new found confidence as well as a fresh new sound. Leading the way with a groovy baseline and gritty production, the song embodies pure attitude and confidence. She takes charge of her own narrative as she stands up for what she believes in and stands up for herself against a guy who is just playing with her emotions by leading her on. “What kind of example do i set? Feeding the monsters in my head. Get outta here, get out my bed”. She takes charge of her emotions during the chorus and tells it exactly like it is; “fuck boys like you”. It has this strong power and therapeutic release to it which will have you waving your middle finger in the air proudly. The funky guitar riff is very reminiscent of Kira Puru’s material and drives that empowering feeling that you can’t and don’t want to shake off. Iggy Azalea jumps on during the second verse to serve you piping hot attitude. Her opening line “Fuck dealing with a fuckboy” will immediately have you screaming “You tell em, girl!” and then she gets even sassier as she gets all self love on the track, “It’s I with the two Gs, bitch, I’m Gucci!”. Her verse adds to the empowering stance this song makes and immediately has it standing out as one of the strongest tracks of the week.
