SINGLE REVIEW: LOVA – I Can Do Better

There was something about Swedish singer-songwriter, LOVA which completely captivated me last year. Her vulnerable and honest indie-pop was so simple but effective with her smooth harmonies and infectious melodies about self love and heartbreak. Continuing the strong release of material, ‘I Can Do Better’ is another confident but emotional song about self belief. This track has a lot of heavy weight as she addresses gender equality and the differences that she has to fight for to get a fair outcome. The opening line will haunt you with it’s honest delivery. “I guess you think I’m not as good as you, don’t you? I guess you think that you just know better, don’t you?”. But she gets even more angsty and honest during the chorus with the absolute gold line; “You’re the problem, not my gender. Anything you can do, I can do better”. It’s such a powerful song that has so much relevance right now in the current social climate. The only thing that doesn’t do this song complete justice is the production. I just feel that it could’ve been bolder and allowed the lyrics to jump a little more because what she is saying is super important. It’s just melodically quite similar to what she’s already done so it’s not as impactful as it could’ve been.
