SINGLE REVIEW: Shawn Mendes – If I Can’t Have You

I think it’s starting to become clear that Shawn Mendes can do no wrong. The Canadian singer-songwriter has come a long way since the release of his debut album ‘Handwritten’ in 2015 and has continually shown a growth in maturity as he navigates the complexities of his early adult years. Fresh from kicking off his world tour in Europe, Mendes has decided that he doesn’t want to stop releasing music in the meantime. So he’s dropped another new song to melt your insides and have you swooning left, right and centre. ‘If I Can’t Have You’ is a synth driven pop-rock song that is ultimately groovy and an undeniable hit. From the opening grab of the chorus, he has you immediately drawn into the pulsating production of the verses before rolling back into that huge chorus that you won’t be able to get out of your head. As the song transitions into the final chorus he gets a little gospel with big hand claps and smooth melodies which is a sound I want to hear from him more in the future. The lovesick storyline follows him confessing his love to an ex and pleads for them to come back to him because he can’t stop thinking about them. “I can’t write one song that’s not about you. Can’t drink without thinking about you. Is it too late to tell you that, everything means nothing if I can’t have you”. We love a good lovesick anthem and Shawn Mendes has provided just that, so get all over it.
