SINGLE REVIEW: Olivia O’brien – Just A Boy

It’s been a long time coming but Olivia O’Brien’s debut album ‘Was It Even Real?’ is finally being released next week. This is exciting news because her sound has been rapidly growing and evolving into something very mature ever since her mainstream introduction through ‘I Hate U, I Love U’. Following on from the self-empowering track ‘Love Myself’, her new single ‘Just A Boy’ takes those vibes to brand new heights. Turning a negative experience into a positive one, she reflects on a guy that is acting shady and make her feel like shit. And instead of letting it get to her she finds the empowerment within herself to realise he’s just a boy and he’s replaceable. “You’re just a boy, baby, what did I expect? Ain’t got no fuckin’ respect, oh, no, yeah. Trust me boy, I’m the best you’ll ever get. But you said you’re through with it, oh, no, yeah”. What a MOOD. And she successfully creates a euphoric vibe with the 90’s inspired R&B pop production which is the ultimate throwback. It will have you feeling nostalgic and ready to dance all your problems away. Which is exactly what she wants you to do with the banger. So prepare to hate boys cause this song will have you feeling that way. Well, for an hour at least.
