SINGLE REVIEW: Super Cruel feat. Ocean Grove – 21 Devils

Last year Super Cruel gave us a little bit of a banger with ‘Me+You’ which featured Brisbane singer-songwriter Hazlett. The vibey track took an organic and vulnerable acoustic sound and transformed it into a bold EDM piece which really stood out. Following it up with their first single of 2019, the production duo have now teamed up with Australian metal band Ocean Grove for something even more experimental. This collaboration is something we didn’t expect at all but it surprisingly works so well as the two artistic differences come together for something original and different. ’21 Devils’ is a fusion of EDM and rock music which isn’t a groundbreaking format but the way they’ve executed it is impressive. Beginning with moody synths and haunting vocals the song will instantly draw comparisons to the likes of Linkin Park. But then for the chorus they bring in heavy guitars and drums which gives you pure angst and emotion in the most theatrical way possible. It’s very nostalgic to the early 2000’s where bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park were mainstream. And maybe Super Cruel and Ocean Grove could bring this sound back to mainstream radio with a bit of a twist? Because it’s gritty, epic and catchy.
