SINGLE REVIEW: Ashlee + Evan – Phases

After the launch of their collaborative project Ashlee + Evan last year, the husband and wife duo released their debut EP, launched their reality TV show and embarked on a massive North American headline tour. It was a mature and intriguing comeback for Ashlee Simpson who hasn’t released new music since her 2008 album ‘Bittersweet World’ minus the ill fated ‘Bat For A Heart’ in 2012 which we don’t speak about. But this time she’s returned a lot stronger, clear headed and has a great vision of where she wants her music to sonically go. This project also introduced Evan Ross (the son of the legendary Diana Ross) as a vocalist and hears them soulfully and soothingly harmonising with each other. After premiering ‘Phases’ in their live show they’ve finally released the studio version which hears this reflective jam come to life. Layered with mature beats, this soulful RNB production is complimented by a dreamy guitar riff which reminds me of Tash Sultana the way it croons along with the vocals. Reflecting on their relationship they question if they could be without each other but quickly realise that they couldn’t because they mean too much to each other. “I could do this without you. Why would I do this without you?” Simpson questions whilst also hopelessly confessing “Love ain’t the same without you. Sad ain’t the same without you”. It’s a love sick and mature track which will have you swaying and singing along to the catchy hook. It’s one of their strongest releases yet which stands strong next to ‘I Do’ as perfectly embodying what this project is all about for them musically.
