After the moody and dark introduction of ‘Wonder Drug’ late last year, it’s no surprise that Allday is heading towards a heavier and mature sound. With his third studio album ‘Starry Night Over The Phone’ slated for release later this year he’s further exploring the production he experimented with on his sophomore record ‘Speeding’. Dedicating the next single to all the lonely hearts, ‘Protection’ is a soothing and melodic track which will hit you right in the feels. “Since you left, I lack direction. No longer in your protection”. He explores the aftermath of heartbreak and the feelings you unravel when you’re trying to put the pieces back together. There is a bit of angst cemented in the emotional lyrics which will have you heavily relating. “Since you left, I’m heaving drinking. You gave up just way too easy. Oh my baby now if you knew, but you only look out for you”. But the delivery covers up the angst with smooth harmonies and a relaxed hip-hop mets indie-pop beat. It’s a interesting direction which is less hype than his debut and comfortably sits in the reflective and hazy sound his last record headed towards. But now that the rollout has begun for the album, I think we’re all ready to finally hear this very hyped collaboration with The Veronicas… so yeah.. hand it over?
