It’s only February and Lizzo’s third studio album ‘Cuz I Love You’ has already become one of my most anticipated records of the year. Over the past couple of years the Detroit singer-songwriter has had a steady incline to fame with her songs featuring in mainstream media and becoming a favourite in the Drag performance scene. With the album slated for a mid April release she’s decided to drop the second single which also doubles at the title track. This soulful number hears her drifting towards a throwback big-band production which is a bold turn after the funky drive of ‘Juice’. However her sass is still very much in tact with fiery verses that give you pure attitude and quotable one liners. From the opening line “Never been in love before. What the fuck are fucking feelings, yo?” to the honest “Once upon a time, I was a ho. I don’t even wanna ho no mo”. But then she gets a little sentimental and romantic on the crooning feel of the chorus where she admits, “I’m cryin’ ’cause I love you”. The whole song explores the infatuation you can have for someone and how that can lead into a healthy or unhealthy obsession. The production cites influences from early big band doo-woop tracks with her personality really shining through. Her vocals are so dominant and I love how they become the centre-piece of the song. And it’s nice to hear a reflective and serious side that levels out her tongue in cheek that we’ve come to know and love because you feel like you are getting to know her on a deeper level. Lizzo is a star and 2019 is all hers for the taking.
