SINGLE REVIEW: Empire Of The Sun – Chrysalis

Empire Of The Sun are one of those bands that has songs that will NEVER die. ‘Walking On A Dream’, ‘We Are The People’ and ‘Alive’ will always remain as a staple in the EDM world and that’s a massive achievement for the Sydney based production duo. They have headlined some of the biggest festivals all over the world and delivered their ridiculously theatrical and crazy live show which has become a unique spectacle. But their third studio album ‘Two Vines’ failed to create the same impact that their previous two created and has left the band in a weird limbo. There is a lot of expectation riding on what they are going to do next and how they are going to elevate themselves so it seems strange that they are going to release the previously unreleased ‘Chrysalis’ as a bonus track on their 10th anniversary edition of their debut album. This anti-climatic b-side should have stayed unheard because it doesn’t live up to the quality of the other songs on the record. It just sounds like an unfinished b-side in comparison and that’s not a good representation for the band. Their next release should’ve been something unstoppable and anthemic. It should’ve showcased why they are a headliner act for festivals. Why they have some of the biggest EDM songs of the last 10 years. And why they’ve created such a name for themselves. But instead this song does the opposite of that and unleashes a messy 80’s inspired track that hinders what might be next.
