SINGLE REVIEW: Mallrat Feat. Basenji – Nobody’s Home

Following the announcement of her biggest homecoming tour yet and having two songs debut in the Triple J Hottest 100, Mallrat has dropped another explorative new song. ‘Nobody’s Home’ hears the Brisbane singer-songwriter teaming up with Basenji for the melodic track. Following the structure of her sophomore EP ‘In The Sky’ she dives further into the indie-pop world with a dreamy production. She romanticises over the idea of an unrequited crush and the dark emotional side that follows. It’s a concept which is very cute and on brand for her evolving fanbase who are in the stages of self discovery and heart break. “Nobody’s home so I sing my songs about you. And when nobody’s close I can think out loud about you”. It’s such a relatable concept that will have you giggling along as you imagine yourself in the situation. There’s been many times I’ve been home alone and talked out loud about unrequited love and my own feelings. It’s a strange thought process and coping mechanism that does regularly occur. The production is very different for Basenji and offers a very clean layout with no big drops or heated electronic moments. Instead it just floats in the dreamy indie pop realm. It’s also majorly different to his pop crossover with Tkay Maizda which impressed listeners at the end of 2017. This indie-pop direction is so exciting for Mallrat though because she’s continually killing it and standing out on the world stage.
