SINGLE REVIEW: Astrid S – Someone New

With the streaming success of her last couple of singles, Astrid S is heading towards a new polished pop sound. It’s a lot more experimental and groovy, whilst she tries to find the sort of artist she wants to be. She’s evolved a lot and grown a lot over the years and it’s exciting to see the direction she’s going towards. However some of her releases have been hit and miss whilst she tries to figure this out. ‘Someone New’ sits in between these realms and works to a degree. It’s catchy and groovy but it’s quite simple. The song was originally written for Charli XCX’s latest project which is quite surprising because I can’t imagine her singing a song like this. The production probably would’ve been very different and altered the make-up of this track but it’s still an interesting concept. “It’s hard, but it’s true. I can’t stop myself from thinking ’bout you. But you’re thinking ’bout someone new”. Lyrically it’s a heartbreak track with a twist and that’s where the song excels. But production wise the song is a little flat as it just follows the current groove trend with a receptive baseline and sounds like a Zara Larsson and Selena Gomez B-side.
