SINGLE REVIEW: AJR – 100 Bad Days

I find it so interesting that AJR are still so underrated. After looking over their discography and seeing their ridiculously high Spotify streaming count, it’s a bit confusing why this New York trio aren’t bigger. They have hits like ‘I’m Ready’, ‘Weak’ and ‘Burn The House Down’ under their belt and are constantly adding to their DIY and experimental sound. But for some reason people don’t really know who they are, but they know the songs. It’s truly a weird concept. Putting that aside, their new single is as bold, memorable and innovative as their previous tracks and will have you ready to put this song on replay for a VERY long time. ‘100 Bad Days’ is a song with a whole lot of potential and a whole lot of heart. It’s about turning negative experiences into positive ones and learning to continually grow from everything that happens in life. The sentiment behind the hook is perfect and will linger in your mind for the rest of the day. “A hundred bad days made a hundred good stories. A hundred good stories make me interesting at parties”. It makes you start to think about the way you reflect on things that happen in your life and question if things are REALLY that bad. To add to this uplifting production and storyline they give you a very experimental and DIY production that stays true to their indie-pop roots. With pulsating synths and percussion they float through the verses with cinematic harmonies and strings which instantly place you inside the blockbuster movie on your life. Drastically changing things up with the vocoder breakdown they launch into a full band chorus that hears them smashing drums and uplifting you further. It’s such a fulfilled and anthemic sound that radio would be silly not to embrace.
