SINGLE REVIEW: Normani feat 6lack – Waves

Normani really is the dark horse of Fifth Harmony. Initially I was the most intrigued to hear her solo material but after Camila’s massive breakthrough success I sort of disregarded that anyone else could really challenge her for that top spot, but iI was wrong. Normani IS that girl. Her collaboration with Khalid topped the charts and her debut solo tracks with Calvin Harris introduced a strong, confident and fiery side to her. To keep the momentum rolling she’s dropped another new song for your listening pleasure. ‘Waves’ is a contemporary RNB track that hears her interpolating pop influences with a beat heavy and seductive sound. From a first listen it draws you in with its relatable lyrics and seductive beat that explores an on and off again relationship. “First I blame you, then I want you. Fucking hate you, then I love you. I can’t help myself, no”. The relatable back and forth lyrics will have you connecting with the confusing side of relationships that have you questioning their toxicity. And lets be honest, we’ve all been there. However whilst the beat heavy production does showcase a different side to the vocalist, it’s not as immediately empowering or as impressive compared to the likes of ‘Love Lies’ or ‘Slow Down’. But it is a consistent grower that has a lot of potential to gain radio play with the correct promotion. However 6lack’s contribution is a little confusing and unnecessary because it really could’ve just been a strong solo track without him. Someone needs to remind her that not every song needs to be a collaboration.
