I’m not going to lie, after the disbandment of Fifth Harmony I was most excited to hear Normani’s solo material and luckily she doesn’t disappoint. Well, completely anyways. Teaming up with Calvin Harris she has delivered two new tracks that introduce a latin inspired RNB funk wave collision of electronic music. It’s definitely on the same wave length as Calvin’s other recent solo material and serves as the perfect introduction to who she is as an solo artist. After massively impressing on her Khalid collaboration ‘Love Lies’ for the Love Simon soundtrack, a lot of eyes were patiently on her waiting to see what she’d do next. ‘Checklist’ is an unfortunate lead single which is a little bit confused in it’s own delivery. The sound is just all over the place and Wizkid and Normani don’t really seem to gel well together and don’t give you a slick or seamless collaboration. At a first listen I was a little worried that this was going to fall into Dinah Jane territory but luckily ‘Slow Down’ saved the day. This little underrated bop has true hit material written all over it. Laced with rhythmic beats this track serves you high BPM’s and a whole lot of attitude. Somewhere in between the musical stylings of Rihanna and Dua Lipa she finds herself just giving you a smooth and seductive delivery. This IS an anthem and a fiery track to get your weekend popping. Let’s just forget ‘Checklist’ exists though.
