Charli XCX has become the queen of singles with a whole year dedicated to the constant release of new music and non-stop touring. The finale of her ‘summer collection’ is the bright and playful synth pop track ‘1999’. Teaming up with Australian favourite Troye Sivan, they cheekily wish they could go back in time and relive some of the most colourful pop-culture days. They reference lyrics from some of your favourite pop artists and songs whilst also referencing movies, tv shows and more. It’s a cool concept that Anne-Marie really brought back into the spotlight with her anthem ‘2002’ but the spin that Charli and Troye give the concept is uniquely cool. “I just wanna go back, back to 1999. Take a ride to my old neighbourhood. I just wanna go back, sing hit me baby, one more time. Wanna go back, wanna go”. From a first listen the song will be instantly stuck in your head and you will find yourself singing along and trying so hard not to dance, but it’s impossible. And that’s okay because this song was created to dance your heart out to. It’s not meant to be taken seriously and you can tell both Charli and Troye had a lot of fun creating this. So there is only one question remaining. Why would you want to go back to 1999?
