SINGLE REVIEW: The Ting Tings – Blacklight

There are just some songs in the world that you will never forget and The Ting Ting’s have a couple of those songs under their belt with ‘That’s Not My Name’ and ‘Great DJ’. The British duo are one of my not so secret guilty pleasures with their alternative pop fusion which is so experimental, fun and quirky. However it has been four years since the band have released their under-appreciated third studio album ‘Super Critical’ but they don’t seem to care about that as they’ve just returned with a darker new sound. Blacklight’ is the first single from their simply titled forthcoming album ‘The Black Light’ which will be officially released on October 26. The song hears them replacing their carefree signature sound you are used to with dark and bold house synths. Sadly this sound isn’t as engaging as their previous material and will catch you off-guard. It’s very in your face and almost feels incorrectly synched with Katie’s vocals as it sounds annoyingly off beat. I tried really hard to like this song because I wanted to be able to write a positive comeback review but I struggled to find anything I actually liked about it. It’s a song that has a lot of sonical elements going on but they’ve forgot the one main objective which is to make a song that people will like. And this just ain’t it.
