Who doesn’t love a post break up song about self pleasure? I mean it’s one of the most natural and empowering things so why not own it and that’s exactly what Clean Bandit and Demi Lovato do on their brand new single. ‘Solo’ begins with the British three pieces signature violins and dance production before introducing some acoustic guitars while Demi’s vocals offer a latin inspired delivery. It’s seductive, intriguing and helps set up that empowering feeling that they are trying to convey. “Since you’ve been gone, been dancing on my own. There’s boys up in my zone but they can’t turn me on cause baby you’re the only one I’m coming for”. The chorus launches this ridiculously catchy and strange hook that you can’t help but get stuck in your head instantly. It’s very experimental with the vocal effects and structure which makes it stand out. However after a first listen you will be a little unsure whether you love the track or not. So a second, a third and a fourth play is necessary and you will finally start vibing along to this low key ridiculous track. It’s a lot of fun and does succeed in breaking the stigma and understanding that it is okay to pleasure yourself and take ownership of it. Its no ‘I Miss You’ but it is a bit of a bop. I’m still unsure if it’s a song I will go out of my way to listen to but if it comes on while I’m out you best believe I’m going to be on that dance floor and dancing like a hot mess.
