With Anne Marie’s debut album “Speak Your Mind” only a week away from being unleashed the UK songstress has decided to release one last song to get excited over. “2002” is that pure pop smash you were waiting for. Previously she’s delivered slick pop-electronic crossovers but you always knew when she did a cheesy pop song that it would be brilliant and she’s done just that. The playful song reflects on the year 2002 and the innocent thoughts we have around falling in love and life in general. She incorporates names of songs by the likes of Nelly, Backstreet Boys, Jay-Z and Britney Spears to tell the story during the chorus and it’s super gimmicky and fun. “Oops I got 99 problems singing bye, bye, bye. Hold up, if you wanna go and take a ride with me better hit me, baby, one more time”. The song begins with a simple guitar strumming that introduces finger clicks and a classic 2002 inspired pop beat that I am LIVING for. Pop music used to be so simple and carefree but some artists take it too seriously now and overthink the whole process. Where as sometimes all you need is a cheesy and simple beat with some playful lyrics to create a cool moment. This has the potential to be an absolute SMASH.
