SINGLE REVIEW: Nicki Minaj – Barbie Tingz + Chun-Li
2017 was one of Nicki Minaj’s busiest years. The rapper featured on about 48732965 collaborations and yet she didn’t really release any solo material. And when she did release solo material it was very forgettable. But the time has come for her to make a comeback and instead of returning with just one single she has instead dropped two. “Barbie Tingz” hears her returning to her roots and delivering attitude filled verses that revisits her Roman personality that you’ve come to know and love over the years. She doesn’t hold back and serves you some classic one-liners and makes it known that she isn’t a fan of these girls trying to be her. “Let’s be real, all you bitches wanna look like me. Wanna be in demand, get booked like me. Wanna run up in the lab and cook like me. But ain’t none you hoes pussy good like me”. She gets sassy and delivers you a catchy hook that will instantly get stuck in your head and will have you embodying your inner Roman. She even addresses rappers who are trying to be like her while she’s been off the grid and rumours are speculating over the fact that Cardi B released her album last week and for some reason Nicki decided now was the perfect time to release music. Convenient? “Rap bitches tell they team, “Make ’em like Barbie”. Had to come off IG so they can’t stalk me. All they do is copy looks, steal music too. Want to see what bitches do when they lose the blue-print. I mean the pinkprint, ho, let it sink in”. This song just serves absolute playfulness and its fun and nostalgic but on the other hand “Chun-Li” is a little disappointing. It just doesn’t live up to the hype “Barbie-Tingz” creates and instead gives you a more classic hip-hop delivery. However that isn’t a bad thing because in the past when Nicki has stripped it all back has been when she’s released some of her best material. (“The Pinkprint” is a true testament to this). It’s just the timing isn’t great. The hype levels are completely different so it will leave you feeling underwhelmed and going back to play “Barbie Tingz”.
