ALBUM REVIEW: MGMT – Little Dark Age

Let me be brutally honest for a second. MGMT peaked when they released their debut album “Oracular Spectacular”. They had three massive breakthrough singles with “Kids”, Electric Feel” and “Time To Pretend” which climbed the charts and were put on heavy rotation for years to come. But ever since then they have decided to ditch the pop elements they explored and stick with the psychedelic indie rock which doesn’t translate as well. Their self titled record was released almost unknowingly in 2013 and their fourth studio album is about to have the same affect. “Little Dark Age” is a forgettable collection of psychedelic synth-rock that sees them trying to adjust to the current synth take over. It’s a bold step but their delivery was just lost in translation. However these songs will give them a cool new texture in their live show and will see their pop hits having a slightly new edge to them. The strongest track on this collection is the lead single and title track “Little Dark Age” which is a completely strange yet captivating song which perfects the sound they were going towards. I just wish the rest of the album was as strong at this one.
